Sadly, plowing into an Applegate pizza (sun-dried tomato and olive oil base, fresh spinach, Roma tomatoes, Applewood-smoked bacon, and ricotta cheese - to.die.for.) at Martolli's isn't a regular experience for us, given that we live 3,000 miles away.
Soooo...homemade pizza it is -- about 80% of the time.
My favorite fresh dough also comes from Whole Foods, but I also love their rustic, premade pizza crusts.
I top these suckers with any combination of fresh or canned tomatoes or a smattering of tomato paste mixed with avocado or olive oil, grilled chicken, a handful or two of fresh spinach, and a healthy dose of shredded mozzarella.
Super simple, and pretty healthy as long as you don't go too crazy with the cheese.
Lately, what seems to be happening is my fam gets a pizza craving and we have no dough. Doh! My go-to way to improvise (and slash calories without forfeiting taste) is to use a tortilla as an impromptu crust.
My favorite recipe? Country star Carrie Underwood's No-Guilt Veggie Pizza, courtesy of Self magazine. If meatless pepperoni isn't your thing, you can always use the real thing, swap it out for another meat, or omit it entirely).
So good and pretty virtuous.
